About M2TS/MTS format?

The .mts, .m2t and .m2ts really are a container extendable for multiplexing audio, video and also other streams. It's based on the MPEG transport stream container and is also referred to as BDAV MPEG-2 transport stream. This format is often used by hi-d video on Blu-ray Disc and AVCHD and HD Camcorders. It usually contain AVC/H264 or MPEG2 video.

There are 2 major variants of MPEG-2 TS. If multiple programs are teams of video and also other streams meant to play together, and are muxed into your TS, it's called an MPTS, or Multiple Program Transport Stream. This is generally for more common broadcasting, like DVB, or over the oxygen HDTV. Following your decoder receives the TS, it may decode only the streams to the program that is playing, and ignores streams for other programs.

Unlike Programs Streams that are optimized for efficient storage and assume the decoder has usage of the full stream for synchronization purposes, Transport Streams are equipped for delivering data in real time over unreliable transport media, to your device that's assumed to get started on reading data from some time following your beginning of transmission.

The BDAV container format suited for Blu-ray Discs can contain one of the three mandatory that support video compression formats H.264/MPEG-4 AVC MPEG-2, or SMPTE VC-1 and audio compression formats, for instance Dolby Digital, DTS or uncompressed Linear PCM. Optionally, supported audio formats are Dolby Digital Plus DTS-HD High definition Audio and Dolby TrueHD. Only if one particular program is muxed in to a TS, it's considered an SPTS or Single Program Transport Stream. SPTS streams generally serve two purposes. If the program to get decoded may be known upfront, like with streaming through the internet, this doesn't happen be the better choice to waste bandwidth transmitting streams that won't ever be decoded, but preserving timing info is still essential. An SPTS solves both problems.

Another common use for SPTS streams is made for stream Capture. Capture devices can simply copy MPEG-2 streams as they're broadcast use SPTS streams. Because that is what they're capturing. Since only one program will probably be captured at any given time, that's what the resulting MPEG file will contain.

Most applications are created to open MPEG-2 files expect the normal information from a Program Stream. And it's often essential to re-package the elementary streams before using the services of them on your desktop. Fortunately, PS and TS streams only differ in delivery information, as an alternative to actual video or audio data, it is possible without the re-encoding or quality loss.
